Student Accommodation Services

Student Accommodation Services

Student Accommodation Services (SAS) ensures that students with disabilities receive equal access opportunities to all MATC programs, courses and services according to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act of 2008 (ADAAA).

SAS provides reasonable accommodations and academic support to students with disabilities who demonstrate specific educational needs to:

  • Support educational progress.
  • Promote completion of educational objectives.
  • Assist individuals with disabilities to acquire skills to obtain and maintain competitive employment.

Defining Disability

Under federal regulations, a student has a disability if they have a:

  • Physical or mental disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
  • Record of impairment or is regarded as having impairment.

Students must express the need for an auxiliary aid or service and give adequate notice of the need to SAS. MATC will then request that the student provide:

  • Supporting diagnostic test results
  • Relevant medical documents
  • Professional prescriptions for auxiliary aids

NOTE: MATC does NOT provide diagnostic testing; however, staff can assist students in locating qualified professionals in the Milwaukee area.

Services Available

MATC offers services to meet the needs of students with disabilities. SAS staff works closely with program counselors, faculty and other experts within the college to address academic and program needs.

MATC can choose the specific aid or service it provides to a student, as long as the aid or service selected is effective. Students have the right to provide input regarding the type and effectiveness of specific accommodations as they relate to their disability.

Accommodations for students with disabilities at MATC vary with each student; an accommodation that works for one student may not work for another student with that same disability.

Services and accommodations available:

  • Disability specialist to provide one-on-one support
  • Adaptive/assistive technology
  • Assistance with course selection
  • Closed-circuit television (CCTV)
  • Computers with enlarged text
  • Note-taking accommodations
  • Sign language interpreting
  • Tape recording of lectures
  • Test accommodations
  • Text conversion into alternate formats
  • Admission testing accommodation

Students with a documented disability who need admission testing accommodations should contact the college’s transition specialist three to four weeks prior to the testing date. Special classroom accommodations are all arranged through the coordinator of the Student Accomodation Learning Center
