Severe Weather and MATC Classes
In the event of severe weather, classes continue as scheduled unless a cancellation or closure is announced.
If severe weather requires closing MATC buildings for in-person classes and services:
- Email to your MATC address and the Rave Alert system will remain the college’s primary communication tool with employees and students. It can provide notifications through the Rave Guardian app and sends alerts via text messages, phone calls and emails.
- MATC will post on matc.edu and social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The college will also share with local news media, however, please rely first on Rave Alert, matc.edu and college social accounts.
Typically, the college will make a decision that impacts all campuses; in the event of a weather emergency that has a substantially stronger impact on one location than another, a decision regarding an individual campus may be made.
If the decision is made to close due to severe weather, the campus or campuses will be closed and virtual assistance will not be available. Online, online-virtual, blended and hybrid classes will continue during a severe weather closure. Face-to-face, Virtual F2F Flexible and HyFlex classes will be canceled. (Students cannot be penalized if they cannot fully participate in the online environment during such a closure. Faculty should consider student access to college resources and other limitations caused by a short-term closure and accommodate as appropriate. and classes will be canceled.)
When possible, delayed start times, class cancellations or college closure will be announced no later than 5 a.m. for day classes and activities, or 1 p.m. for evening classes and activities. “Day” classes are those that begin before 4 p.m.; “evening” classes are those that begin at or after 4 p.m.
In the event that repeated class cancellations impact academic requirements, adjustments may be made and make up class time may be necessary. Faculty and students will be informed if this is required.

For Employees
If severe weather occurs over consecutive days, virtual work may be required in some areas to ensure student services and college functions continue. Employees will be informed if this is required.
Pay to essential employees will be the same as in the past. The limited number of essential employees who must report to campus to maintain essential campus operations will be compensated as in the past.
