Waiting Lists

Matc's waitlist policy

Waiting Lists

Have you heard about “petitioning” to get into certain MATC programs? This process is being replaced by a new waiting list process outlined on this page.

When there are more students than seats available in an associate degree, technical diploma or certificate program with limited capacity in its technical courses, students are placed on a waiting list. When students have completed all of their academic preparedness requirements (if applicable) and when seats become available, they will be moved off the waiting list in the order of their application date, time and residency status. Academic preparedness requirements are the minimum requirements that students need to meet in order to get off the waiting list. Requirements can include minimum GPA, entrance exam score or completion of specific general education courses. Academic requirements can be found on each program’s individual web page.

(For associate degree programs: these programs typically include general education courses, such as English and math, and students on a waiting list for these programs can take general education classes while on the waiting list.)

If you have been accepted to a program and placed on a waiting list, you are probably wondering how it all works. Here’s an overview of the waiting list process and what you can expect.

How It Works

  • You will need to opt into the waitlist of your desired program when completing the admissions application. Once application is submitted, you will be added to your selected program waitlist.Your order on the list is determined by the date and time you applied and whether you’re a resident of the MATC District or another location. We give first priority to students who are residents of the MATC District (Milwaukee County, most of Ozaukee County and the Germantown School District in Washington County), then to residents of Wisconsin outside of the MATC District, and finally to others.
  • Each semester while on the waitlist, you will receive a “Student Waitlist Participation Confirmation” form confirming that you would like to continue to opt-in or be removed from the waitlist. The form will be sent to your MATC student email and personal email on file on February 1 for Summer and Fall terms and September 1 for Winter and Spring terms. Please respond in seven calendar days to confirm your continued interest in the waitlisted program to maintain your spot on the waitlist. If we do not receive a response, you will be removed from the waitlist.
  • Your student record will be reviewed before each term (March 1 for Summer and Fall terms and October 1 for Winter and Spring terms) by your Academic & Career Pathway team to determine if you have met all the program’s academic preparedness requirements. Not sure what those requirements are, please visit your program webpage at matc.edu.
  • Once you have met the academic preparedness requirements, then you will be ready to register for technical courses specific to your program when a seat becomes available.
  • Once a seat is available, you will receive an offer starting on March 1 for Summer and Fall terms and October 1 for Winter and Spring terms . It will be imperative that you respond to Accept, Decline, or Defer your seat offer by completing the Waitlist Program Seat Offer by the deadline date listed on the offer.
  • Register for technical courses specific to your programs. If you don’t register, Admissions will remove you from the waiting list and the program.

Communicating your intentions by accurately and timely completing the Waitlist Offer Form are key to successfully navigating the waiting list process. Please check your MATC and personal email accounts daily!
